Memorial DayMay 25, 2018
Today’s blog is not about business, Today’s blog is about what this weekend is all about, memorializing those who have paid the ultimate price for freedom.
Last year, my husband and I decided to travel Europe by train, We planned our trip around WWII history. We started in Germany and traveled through all the countries ravaged by Hitler. We toured the Jewish Ghettos of Poland and the Czech Republic. We visited Schindler’s Factory and Auschwitz in Poland. All along, we planned to end our trip on the beaches of Normandy.
We are both from military families, and one of our kids is a Marine. My two uncles were in the Army during WWII, and my husband’s uncle survived Pearl Harbor only to be killed later in the war. My father-in-law lost his leg and spent the rest of his life with this vidid memory of being shot down over Italy.
Words cannot express what we found on those cliffs in France. The solemnity of the place is awe inspiring. Looking at the rocks and crags they had to scale, and the German fortifications awaiting them, one wonders how they ever succeeded in their mission. To say we were humbled is a vast understatement.
Monday, we once again honor those who gave all-not only during WWII, but in every war and conflict throughout our history. We say, “Thank you,” from a grateful and still free people.
We are truly, “The Land of the Free Because of the Brave,”
Happy Memorial Day!
